It can reversibly bind to the receptor on the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosome, interfere with the formation of ribosome complex between tRNA and mRNA, prevent peptide chain extension and inhibit protein synthesis, so that the growth and reproduction of bacteria can be inhibited rapidly. Doxycycline can inhibit both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Bacteria have cross resistance to doxycycline and oxytetracycline.
